The Verbatim Project
On Friday 11th March Drama students at Clarendon got the unique opportunity to hear a play that was made from words they had actually spoken. The play was a collaboration between 10 Wiltshire schools and Prime Theatre Company who are based in Swindon.
Students in Year 9 met the director and writer of the play in November and, after playing some Drama games to build a relationship, the students had long discussions about all manner of subjects which were recorded. These were then re-worked into the script for the performance which is currently on it’s premier tour.
Aaron Parsons, the director, said that they were amazing, how thoughtful and how funny the play turned out to be. “This is a play all adults should see” he said. “These are the authentic voices of teenagers talking about their view of the world”
Clarendon students were amazed and delighted to discover how many of their comments got through the process and there were several moments when the excitement of hearing their words spoken by actors caused whispered comment.
One of the students said afterwards “I thought the play was very clever and all topics that were relevant to teen issues were in the play. I thoroughly enjoyed it” Prime Theatre now hope to take the show on a national tour so the words of Clarendon teenagers will be heard across the country.
