Sixth Form Work Related Learning Programme
As part of our additional curriculum students are encouraged to undertake work placements within the wider community. These should be arranged as a block placement in Term 6, following the completion of June examinations. The placement generally comprises 5 working days and we have asked current students in Year 12 to seek a placement between the dates of Monday 3rd July and Friday 7th July 2017.
However, we are able to accept shorter placements and if this week is not convenient, we can discuss another time in the school calendar for specific students.
As with many Sixth Forms, students are tasked with finding their own placement rather than rely on a database which may restrict choice and scope. To support them in this task, we have created a template for an introductory letter or email and they will also receive support in creating a CV. The school provides a work placement pack with an introductory letter, specific information for employers and a work placement agreement form to be completed by all parties.
Some students seek a more long term commitment working within the community during the school year, possibly for one day per week or a few hours per week. This is particularly relevant for placements required as part of a vocational course or for work in Primary schools or voluntary organisations.
We encourage students to draw on their own expertise and skill, using existing contacts where possible, but also to explore new and challenging situations which take them out of their “comfort zone” and help them develop essential workplace, employability and life skills.
Clearly, there are enormous benefits for our students in terms of their personal development but we hope that the placement will be equally beneficial for the recipients. Many of our students have established close, effective relationships that have extended beyond the initial placement, in some cases continuing their involvement after leaving the Sixth Form.
