Uniform
At Clarendon, we recognise the benefits of school uniform and are proud that our students are smart – they are our best ambassadors. We believe that our uniform:
- Promotes high standards and a sense of community.
- Supports inclusion.
- Is fair to students from different backgrounds.
We also recognise that students need to express their individuality and sense of identity, especially in their teenage years, and so our uniform is based on key non-negotiables with some limited freedoms to allow for personal expression.
Uniform Essentials for All Seasons
- Blazer:
Navy Clarendon blazer with embroidered school logo (required). Students must have blazers on at the following times:
- When they walk through the gate in the mornings
- When they are lining up at the start of the day.
- When they enter a classroom.
- When they exit a classroom.
If a student does not have a blazer to put on when lining up outside a classroom, or if they refuse, they should be sent to Behaviour Hub. Blazers can be removed at break times if a student wishes to wear their shirt/grey jumper only.
- Shirt:
Plain white shirt with turn down collar - no logos/decorations (required). Shirts must be tucked in during the school day unless playing sport at breaks and lunches. Ties must be done up.
- Tie:
Navy, royal blue and white Clarendon tie (required).
- Jumper (optional):
A V-necked woollen-style grey jumper supplied by Scholars (optional). This can be worn in addition to the blazer, and not as alternative. No other jumpers are permitted.
- Trousers or Skirt:
Grey formal trousers/shorts in wool/polyester business style - no jeans or leggings to be worn as trousers (required). Black or white socks should be worn with the trousers. As an alternative to the trousers, students may wear the Clarendon checked skirt with box-pleat. Black tights, plain black leggings (no visible logo/pattern) or black knee-length socks can be worn with the skirt (required). For comfort, some students may choose to wear mostly black or white ankle socks over tights/leggings. This must be unrolled at the waist and of a suitable length.
- Footwear:
Footwear (shoes or ankle boots) should be suitable for school. By this we mean that they should be plain black and made of a polishable leather-type material. Shoes must not have high heels for health and safety reasons around site.
- Ex-Clarendon Uniform:
We do recognise that some students may still be wearing items that were part of the previous uniform expectations, and we support this for environmental and financial reasons.
Final decisions about suitability of uniform rest with the Academy. On rare occasions, reasonable adjustments may be made to meet students’ medical needs, and this information will be captured in students’ learner profiles, and the uniform adjustments list.
Coats/Outer Wear
Coats can be worn in between lessons and at break/lunchtimes on top of a blazer. We define a coat to be an extra top layer that either fully zips or buttons up and that is large enough to fit over the full school uniform. Baseball caps/hats, hoods, scarves and gloves must be removed in lessons.
Accessories
- Jewellery items that are not allowed in school at all for health and safety reasons are:
- Hoop or bar piercings (ear or nose), as these could get caught and pulled in busy areas of the school. Please ask students to remove these and alert the Behaviour Hub if they do not.
- Facial or body piercings that cannot be safely removed or covered for practical lessons.
- Earrings must be studs or small hoops. Other piercings are acceptable so long as they are studs.
- Any student unable to remove their piercing for fear of it sealing up will be given a clear plastic equivalent (retainer).
- All jewellery is brought into school at the risk of the student; the school cannot be held responsible for items that become damaged, lost or stolen. Students will be asked to cover or remove items that could pose a risk to health and safety in certain lessons and need to be willing to do so. If students are concerned about leaving precious items in their blazers or bags during lessons such as PE, they should leave them at home for safekeeping.
Hair and Make-Up
- All students are free to style their hair as they wish, except for any styles that could cause offence e.g. a word or logo shaved into the head. Students can wear hair accessories and colour their hair if they wish to do so. Hair colour is not mandated but extreme styles will be reviewed by the Headteacher if necessary.
- Students can wear make-up that is deemed suitable for a professional/working environment.
- Students can have coloured nail polish if they wish but acrylic/false nails are not allowed for health and safety reasons. Nails must be short enough that they pose no safety risk in practical lessons
- False eyelashes can be worn if they do not obstruct the student’s vision in any way.
- For some practical lessons, students may be asked to remove jewellery items, nail varnish and/or tie long hair up, and need to be willing to comply.
Uniform Support:
We will always do our best to support families who need help with uniform. If you need help to buy new or pre-loved items of uniform, please get in touch with Mr Sanchez. You can email him on axs@clarendonacademy.com.
We understand that there will be occasional issues with uniform. To support students with these issues we have a stock of uniform within school to lend students on a day-to-day basis. This means that any uniform issues can be corrected quickly and allow students to return to lessons. Students who refuse to correct issues with uniform will be dealt with in line with our behaviour policy. This means that students will need to remain in the Behaviour Hub until this is rectified. You can support us with this by emailing us with an explanation of the problems you are facing before your child arrives at school. Please send the email to axs@clarendonacademy.com.
